Violence & Vinings Gig Announcement

I’ve got a family history (a generation ago anyway) of dv (domestic violence) and decided to do whatever I can to attack (no pun intended) the root cause in order to help prevent this cycle. Read this blog article if you want to learn why I’m investigating Men Stopping Violence. And please leave a comment.

I’ve recently been asked and, yes, music is what I’m doing full-time. I have other forms of income and a Bachelor’s in Industrial Design but halfway through decided I wanted to take music seriously and made that what mattered to me. Been a tough & lonely road but I believe I’m crafty and dedicated enough to “make it” and, furthermore, I’ve realized music can do so much more that I originally thought: you can latch onto a cause and make a significant change in society.

The smallest voice inside your head is prolly the right one.

So on the 18th of November I’m going to sit in on a court-mandated Men Stopping Violence session at the courthouse. There, men learn about better ways and how to deal with intense emotions.

Anyway, I want to get on CBS Atlanta Better Mornings and have true information about this cause and play a song, 15% of my CD or shirt or whatever would go to MSV. It’s alarming to find out how many people I tell about this cause have been directly impacted by dv. I want to do all I can to fix this glitch in society. I’ll keep y’all updated.

Also, I’d like to announce an intimate show this coming Thursday, Nov. 17th in Vinings. The venue is super = Inside Out  Accessories. Somewhere between an art store and a gallery, they only sell art made by Georgia artists – and at remarkably low prices. You’ll be shocked. Before D’ree Harris, owner of this 8 month old establishment finds out she should be charging more, you should get over there and buy something for your girlfriend. She will love you forever and you can’t go wrong here… Or just come & check out a few of our new songs and receive ONE FREE HUG. I’ll be there from 6 – 9 performing as Jake Rathburn & the Local Blokes: Fen Fenwick, Rob Agocs (Red Cadillac), and possibly a few more.

Inside Out Accessories
4300 Paces Ferry  Rd Suite 230
770-432-8855

D'ree Harris is an inspirational entrepreneur with great taste, and a heart.

Jake’s Shirts on the Spot

With no real income and desperate to earn money to support the next costly steps for music success, my new goal is to earn $100 / day, as inspired by an NPR interview about a guy who did just that after finding himself unemployed. I’ve been looking for jobs and, honestly, I don’t want one. It would simply mean too many hours away from music = not so smart when commited to being an outlier.

Alas! Today, while at Candler Park Fall Fest an idea came to me while meandering between artists in booths aplenty; I’ve decided to start an ever-so-simple business, drawing cute, funny, and weird things on shirts, purses, and maybe even shoes.

It's gonna be this easy.

I started drawing when I was pretty young, like age seven. Weekends at dad’s apartment would be spent blowing through stacks of printer paper he “borrowed permanently”, drawing everything from action figures to the “Sea Duck” from the hit cartoon series, Tailspin. So anyway, when I go home to Cincinnati I should scan some of those.

For now, you can look at how my skills have improved (the five years of design school probably didn’t hurt). You may find me at Piedmont Park in Atlanta, doodling away and getting paid, $100/day.

Need songs for a limited vocal range?

Being able to cover songs that actually sound good with my voice (and style) is something I’ve been battling for years. This is why I’m in he process of creating… [drum roll] >>> BASS BARITONE TABS

Though I’ve written several songs to suit my voice, I have recently decided to get paying cover gigs, so I’m in the process of compiling a list of songs that work for my bass-baritone voice, finding the tabs (chord progressions for guitar), and setting them up for printing to put in a binder to take to cover gigs.

Morrissey, looking cool and singing low

One hurdle is finding songs that fit your voice and you actually like singing. This may be something you’ll have to do for yourself, but to help me, I’ve heeded the advice of one of my friends and music mentors, Chris Cates. He’s got a ton of songs listed on his site that he plays out and I’m in the process of learning as many of those that work for me. You’ll notice Chris is a definite tenor and has notes I’ll never have, so I’m also looking at the songs of other singers, like those of Morrissey  (lead singer from The Smiths).

For any of you reading, you may have looked for tabs online and been disappointed that the chords are sometimes inaccurate, so what I’m going to do is take all of the songs in my cover song book (that I have tabbed out accurately and set up in wordpad files to fit a page) and upload them to this site.

It’s been a ton of work and what I want to do is post these songs on my site for others to download for free – ready to print. As a bonus, I’ve specifically chosen songs that are relatively easy to play on guitar.

I will let you know when it’s up!

Bonjourno from Italy & Excellent Parking

By the time you read this post I will have played music internationally for the first time! It’s Friday, Sept. 16th and I’ve scored myself a paying gig whilst on a family trip to Italy!

It’s been a fascinating trip thus far, primarily dodging psychotically-driven taxis and scooters. Also saw the Pope at his monthly public announcement. Yey, Catholicism! A deep history has unraveled itself here and I would strongly suggest visiting Rome someday.

I’d also like to tell you about a show, opening for Wesley Cook on Friday, Sept. 23 @ Smith’s Olde Bar. When I get back, I’m going to be scrambling to get a group ready for that. FYI parking for Smith’s is excellent, in the huge parking lot just across Monroe.
P.S. This show is actually on Wes’s B-day, so I’m pretty sure someone is getting laid that night.

MOVIN’ ON UP!!….

Hi,

Ya know, I’ve kind of been worried that I’d end up playing a bar gig where no one is listening for my next gig. But alas! It just so happens that I’m playing at the W downtown as part of Drinkshop Live this Thursday!! From 9 – 11:30p.m. you’ll be able to enjoy all the FREE RATH you can handle. I’ll hopefully be joined by off-the-hook bassist, Bryan Hall, and Erin Williams, a percussionist with whom to be reckoned!!

We’ll be performing as Jake Rathburn & Friends. Go ahead and jot that on your calendar right now!!

For the time being here’s a video clip of this past Friday’s show at the Red Light Cafe, shot by the best of the best, Atlanta’s very own Gabriel Hinson. Also included in this video is pre-show practice with Chris Cates filling in for Bryan on bass. I think you’ll dig it!!!

Ok, I guess Gabe didn’t get that done. Sorry.
